Kalmar, Bert, author, actor, scenarist; b. New York, N.Y., Feb. 16, 1884; d. Los Angeles, Calif., Sept. 18, 1947. ASCAP 1920. Ran away from home at ten, joining tent show as child prodigy magician. Became comedian in vaudeville and writer of special material, and from writing parodies of songs began original composition. While still in vaudeville became ac­tive for some years in popular music field in New York. From 1930 until death active in Hollywood as song­writer and scenarist. Wrote songs for stage shows: Helen of Troy, New York; Earl CarrolTs Vanities; The Ramblers; Five O'Clock Girl; Elsie Janis Puzzles; Twinkle, Twinkle, Top Speed. Kanner, Jerry (Jerome Herbert*, com­poser, violinist, author, musicologist, arranger, Doctor of Music; b. New York, N.Y., Nov. 17, 1903. ASCAP 1940. Educ: Columbia Univ., New York School of Music and Arts. Studied violin with Franz Kneisel, Paul Stoeving, Leopold Auer; har­mony with Frank Howard Warner; composition, Edward Kilenyi, Maurice Ravel; counterpoint, Cornelius Ryb-ner; orchestral conducting, Walter Damrosch, Albert Stoessel; advanced theory, Rachmaninoff. At four started violin, at eight debut as violinist, Car­negie Hall. Concert violinist and phonograph recording concert master through U.S. and Europe. Concert master and asst. conductor various symphony and motion picture orches­tras. Member of Authors' League and Radio Writers' Guild. Won Belasco Cup in Little Theatre Tournament 1921 for stage direction of Outward Bound. Musical amanuensis for Victor Herbert, who sponsored his first com­positions. From 1920, musical execu­tive and active editor. "Soir D'Avril," Verdi Club (Naples) International Award for best piano composition 1932. Awarded annual Henry Purcell prize 1945 for Anglo-Amer. com­posers in London for cycle: Songs of Hope and Regret, Opus 73. Other honors include Purcell Trophy 1950 for song, "Hazel's Song"; Gold Medal of Rome for piano folio, Minute at the Spinet; Ravel Ribbon and De­bussy Prize by Franco-Amer. Society; first prize awarded by Sociadade De Musica Do Brasil for concert songs in two languages; honors from Huron Indian Tribe for his authentic Indian compositions.
